The
following advertisement concerns the latest book written by the famed
protopsaltis and musicologist, Theodoros AKRIDAS, bearing the title
“CRITICISM of the MUSICAL «DYSPLASIAS» (MALFORMATIONS) of Simon KARAS”.
Clearly scientific, this book is distinguished by the admirable
classification of its very interesting content (which has been
drawn from a rich bibliographical study), the full documentation of various
arguments presented in an unambiguous formulation and, in particular, because it leads its reader towards obvious
conclusions. |
Within
its 128 precious pages, the precise and ergonomic use of words is worthy of
every comparison to a symphony by Mozart: perfect harmony exempt from any
unnecessary elements. This most experienced researcher and writer presents
numerous irrefutable and unshakable elements, thus revealing the fallacy but
also literally demolishing the “myth” that has been created concerning Simon
Kara’s “contributions”. At the same time, the author does not hide his concern
concerning the future of genuine Greek music, given that this modern musical
malformation - as he very
appropriately named this musical transformation - continues to prevail, in irresponsible
manner, thus devastating millenaries of tradition. |

The
numerous opinions of all these very important musicians were collected with patience
and labour by the author, and constitute a true “catapult” against the
“works” and “contributions” of Simon
KARAS. Even though the author limits himself solely to the musicological
comments of the above-mentioned experts, the meticulous reader will be able
to perceive a lot more. As an example, it is reported that KARAS had himself
“revealed” that the writing of his theories were “aided from God-sent
coincidences”, such as that of the “fortuitous fall of the musical
palaeographical “screen” due to some accidental gesture”. Others, however, “revealed” the « essence »
of Simon KARAS himself, relating how he’d “accept no other’s opinion but his
own”, how he “saw the western musicologists through a very suspicious view”,
how in “the frightening crises of either enthusiasm or rage he’d turn all
red”, how his “new directives prohibited the playing of Cretan music using a
violin”, and much more. One shudders while learning that all disks containing
Cretan music played with a violin, and that were stocked within various Greek
radio stations’ libraries, were eventually scratched with a nail and further
labelled as “ILLEGITIMATE”! From another perspective, one wonders as to the
“wisdom”, “authority” and musical “knowledge” of KARAS, especially after
reading testimonies such as the following: “Don’t tell us about KARAS… he’d
simply transcribe whatever we’d sing to him… were we to also sit around, and
watch inactively while he’d sing our songs…? and, save all, comply to his
demands that we address him as “Master”?
Who do you think you are (Oh! KARAS) that I should address you as
“Master”? How can this be, since it was I who revealed the songs and taught
them to you?” This, therefore, was the “wise teacher of the Hellenic race”,
Simon KARAS. |

The
overall content of this work shows clearly that Simon Karas had tried to
approach the Hellenic musical tradition in a manner that was entirely both subjective
as well as totally remote from its very essence, its rules, its corresponding
traditional writings and its very spirit. He simply created a completely
personal and obscure musical system, which is nothing else but a jumble of
musical dysplasias with vast contributions from arabic, persian and turkish
traditions, as he exactly describes these in his labyrinthine and hazy
theory. His followers are a number of worshippers (and most probably
“beneficiaries” of some sort) of incomprehensible ideas, who conceive wisdom
as being anything they cannot
understand. There are, of course, some others who lean towards both sides,
for reasons that remain their own. |
L’ensemble
Οἱ
The
assertions of some followers of Karas that he was a meticulous “student” of
Greek music are completely groundless, because, beyond his lack of scientific
method, which he disdained and rejected all in
transgressing basic rules concerning research, he relied
entirely upon his personal views. He is still considered by many as an
important personality due to his “cleverness” and “zeal” for music.
Nevertheless, we believe that cleverness and zeal are not the only
prerequisites for a positive contribution to any domain of knowledge. There
are numerous cases of very intelligent people who have remained known
throughout History mainly because for their extremely negative and
catastrophic works. |
The
indisputable historic truth is that all men of music, ancient and
contemporary alike, have approached and interpreted it by means of scientific
data and artistic apprenticeship. It is thus that they have clarified and
simplified it, guiding this music towards its future enlightenment. On the
contrary, KARAS worked by chance and suppositions. It is thus that he
converted anything that was simple into issues far complex, that which was
transparent into something barely translucent, that which was easily
comprehensible into something completely obscure, that which was self evident
into a heap of unsubstantiated claims, thus how unnecessarily complicating
the Hellenic musical tradition, by following a completely opposite course as
compared to our forefathers, leading it thus towards darkness. It is odd,
indeed, that a number of his followers, although fairly well “educated”,
share these completely personnal beliefs of his. |
In
contrast to such «educated» minds, an "uneducated" man of the past
had once, however, written the following: «Without virtue and suffering for
one’s motherland as well as belief in this land’s religion, a nation simply
cannot exist. Its members should be really careful not to be dominated by
self-interest».[2] This
"uneducated" man was fully aware that mercenaries and ideals do not
go hand-in-hand. |

Τὸ
That
which constitutes a paradox - and which is extremely dangerous for our
music - is that this totally unofficial (not only in terms of
ecclesiastical authorities, but in terms of government educational boards as
well) theoretical work of KARAS is being ardently promoted, and is
infiltrating public schools and conservatories like an illegal intruder,
displacing the long-established traditional and truly scientific books that
have already been accredited by official ecclesiastical and state bodies. In
case this Karas movement were to prevail – an evolution that is highly
undesirable - then – to our great sorrow - we will witness the
removal from the analogions of all works using the classical orthography of
the three teachers, and their progressive replacement by those using Karas’
“system”. In parallel, we will also witness the progressive “disappearance”
of recordings made by sacred music specialists as well as by masters of folk music.
It is thus that the “mother tongue” of our music will change radically in
character, and that a fundamental element of our culture will definitely
disappear. |
The
great philosopher Plato describes as follows the catalytic effect music has
upon the shaping of morals in a given society: «We must diligently avoid any
change in our music, because we will be in jeopardy of losing everything, for
nowhere can one change the rules of music without shaking the fundamental
Laws of the State.» |
It
is this very danger underlined by the Plato, nowadays surfacing in distinctly
visible form, that faces the defenders of our ecclesiastic and folk music,
which they must combat and terrace before it completely devours our holy
cultural heritage. Unfortunately, the cries of anguish of those on the front
line will not suffice to rescue our national musical treasure. In order to
deal effectively with this mounting problem - which is a major national
and cultural issue – the State and Church are fervently called upon to
intervene as quickly as possible so as to save our cultural values. Such
action is required for the survival our Nation, and is a prerequisite for its
historical continuation without any further anomalous interruption. |
